Abstract
Purpose : The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a preseason conditioning program on the occurrence and severity of soccer injuries.

Materials and Methods : 40 professional football players in SK group participated in the study over 3 year periods. Every players participated in the Special SK Winter Training Program for 6 weeks before the beginning of the soccer season. The sport-specific program consisted of cardiovascular conditioning, plyometric, strength training and flexibility exercise to improve one¡¯s speed and agility. The main outcome was an injury that required a game or practice to be missed. According to the duration of treatment (less than 2 weeks, more than 4 weeks), severity of injuries were classified into grade I, II, III respectively.

Results : 71.6% of all injuries occurred in the lower extremity, 5% in the upper extremity and 23.4% in the others. According to the severity of injury in each year, the rate of grade I injury was 86%, 68% and 73%. that of grade II was 9%, 27% and 6%, that of grade III was 5%, 6% and 6% in each 2000, 1999 and 1998. Injury incidence per person was 0.86 in 2000, 0.64 in 1999 and 1.05 in 1998 each year.

Conclusion : Although not statistically significant, the significant decrease in the number of reported injuries year by year in this group suggests that adequate preseason conditioning program is very important to competitive soccer players for the following soccer season.
